KO-COON Merino Nesting Pod 3-in-1

Why the KO-COON Merino Nesting Pod 3in1 Is the Most Thoughtfully Designed Sleep Solution for Newborns

Why your baby's first sleep environment matters

Your newborn spends up to 16–18 hours a day sleeping. In these early months, sleep supports brain development, physical growth and emotional regulation.

It's not only how long your baby sleeps, but how they sleep, where, and with what support.

That's why we created the 3-in-1 Merino Nesting Pod: a handcrafted, natural-fibre sleep space designed with input from paediatric physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Understanding newborn sleep cycles

Newborns alternate between two stages of sleep:

  • Active sleep (REM, light sleep): your baby may twitch, stretch or smile. These movements help wire the motor pathways for later skills like crawling and walking.
  • Quiet sleep (deep sleep): a still, restful phase when the body releases growth hormones and consolidates memory.

These phases alternate naturally. A breathable, familiar space helps your baby move between them and settle more easily.

How to use the pod: day and night

Supervised daytime sleep: the nest. With the border in, the pod forms a close, contained nest that gives your baby the held feeling of the womb and helps settle the startle reflex.

  • 0–4 months: use the tied newborn cover, which forms a soft hammock shape that supports back sleep and gently deters rolling.
  • From 4 months, once your baby can roll with control: switch to the 4m+ cover, which opens the border into a roomier U-shape so your baby can stretch and move.

Overnight: flat and firm. Take the border out and use the nest cover over the flat merino mattress, like a fitted sheet. Your baby sleeps on a firm, flat surface with the same breathable merino and cotton. Bring the border back for supervised daytime sleep.

Whatever the time of day, follow safe-sleep basics: baby on their back, on a firm, flat, clear surface, and supervised.

Designed with professional input

We designed the pod with input from paediatric physiotherapists and occupational therapists. They look for even, medium-firm support of the developing spine, neck and head, support that holds a baby without forcing posture, and a contained, womb-like shape that helps a newborn settle.

What makes the pod unique

Every part is modular, natural and designed to adapt:

  1. Merino base (Merino Moses mattress): medium-firm, in a soft, breathable cotton sleeve. It also works on its own as a Moses basket mattress.
  2. Border: a 1.9 m merino roll in a cotton casing that forms the raised edge of the nest. Take it out for overnight sleep.
  3. Two covers (newborn and 4m+): the newborn cover ties into a hammock shape, and the 4m+ cover opens into a roomier U. Both are breathable cotton double knit.
  4. Carry bag: for moving the pod between rooms or taking it away.

Why merino

Merino is a natural temperature regulator, cool in summer and warm in winter. It wicks moisture and is naturally resistant to dust mites, mould and mildew. It's also naturally flame-resistant, so there's no chemical flame retardant against your baby's skin.

One pod, many uses

  • For supervised daytime sleep and rest, in a cot or on the floor
  • For tummy time and cuddles
  • As a travel companion
  • In parts: the base as a Moses mattress and later a toddler pillow, and the border as a cordless cot bumper or tummy-time support
